Whisper plugin for WordPress is available! Whisper is a unique WordPress plugin that allows your blog’s registered users to leave “whisper”-type comments to Admin or other registered users. Only the intended person (and Admin) can see the whisper. This plugin is useful for those bloggers who do not wish to leave their email addresses on their blogs but wish to have their readers leave private comments.
The current version of Whisper is version 1.2 beta.
Download and documentation are available here.
Whisper is under GPL and is available for free. You can download, use, modify, or keep in the back of your plugins directory in total disregard for eternity.
Please leave a comment here for bug report and additional support.
**Update: Version 1.2 Beta is now available for testing.

There are no users to select in the drop down box under the to: field.
http://www.askjewels.com/weblog/?p=168
In the comments there I was logged in (into my blog) & tried a whisper, & it showed up as a regular comment as far as I see. The test whisper post says Testing…1.2.3.
I awas signed in under admin, now that I think of it, so do I need to add an additional log-in for it to work? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Jewels

Yay!! It works! Thank you SO much Mr. Genius! That was I problem I needed to sign up a new user! You rock & so does this plug in!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!

Hi Jewels. Yes you will need to have at least one other user other than the admin (yourself) in order for the drop-box to show up with someone to whisper to (because there is no point whipsering to yourself :P).
When you are logged in as admin, you will see the comment prefixed with (Whisper). If you log out and check again, you should be able to see the full effect.
I have registered on your blog and tested it…seems to be working alright.
Enjoy.

Hi I’m just wondering if non-registered users can use this whisper feature as well?
I just installed the plug-in and am now testing it. I logging out and tried with made up info. My made up info. includes a non-registered viewer and therefore am not able to whisper.
I would like to know how I would go about making this useable by anyone.
Thank-you

Dear Demara,
Currently only registered users are allowed to leave whispers. Since several private requests have already been made regarding to this, in the next version I will permit non-registered users to leave whispers to the Admin (but not to other users). So stay tuned.

Suggestion: add support for marking posts/pages “whisper only” or “auto-whisper” or “enforce whisper” or something along this line. This would mean that all comments to that post/page are automatically marked as whispers, and visitors can’t change that. It would be very useful for the contact page, for instance, to make sure all attempts to reach you are private.

This can probably be easily implimented with custom fields. I’ll think about it. Thanks for the great suggestion.

That’s a good idea. I used to tweak my WP to hide comments for pages, but this plugin is a much more ellegant solution. If that idea would be added I’d definitely use this plugin full time.
Great work.

whisper comment is shown in RSS feed.
please help!
August 24th, 2006, 9:47 pm
So it is. Hmm..it appears that there is currently a problem with Wordpress’s plugin hook which filters comment text…it doesn’t filter RSS text. I will look into it ASAP. In the mean time, please DISABLE comment feed by renaming your wp-commentsrss2.php to something else (e.g. wp-commentrss2.old), until this problem is resolved. Very sorry about this.
August 25th, 2006, 12:14 am
it works ,but if use the plugin .whisper will be shown in quote…
August 25th, 2006, 12:38 am
It looks like I may have to actually encrypt the whisper comments in the database, rather than applying Wordpress filters….oh well, next version. I will try to make it backward compatible, so old style filter-based whispers can also work.

Hi, the newer version sounds great! Can’t wait to try it out. Please keep me posted. If you could give me a quick “shout” at my blog place when it’s ready that would help me out, otherwise I may just have to stumble upon your response again like I did this time, by checking my search engine positioning.
Thanks again though for the quick reply!

Great plugin!
Two things:
1-a way to tie into smart unread comments plugin would be nice, so users only see ‘new comment’ if the whisper was to them, so not everyone clicks through to read “this was privately whispered to someone else”
2-easier to make visual distinctions of whispers, so users more easily recognize it as a whisper, and so if they respond they remember to whisper it back.
October 23rd, 2006, 8:23 am
oh and
3-a way to display just the whispered comments, so i can easily delete them after say 30 days

What if I only want users to whisper to the person who made the post? (Admins should be able to see the whispers as well, but not appear in a list.)
But more importantly, I don’t want users to be able to whisper to another user who didn’t post or leave a comment on that post. If you have lot of registered users, that can lead to a very long drop down list!
Thanks for your help

Excellent plugin, answering a need raised by one of my readers - but can you tell me please the ETA to fix the problem noted back in August, regarding the RSS comments feed displaying whispered comments? I don’t feel able to implement the plugin until that is fixed as I can’t disadvantage those readers who presently use the RSS feed.

Thank you all very much for the feedbacks, bug reports, and suggestions. Yes I have been neglecting (and may continue to do so for a little while) these plugins due to my taking on another big project at work. I promise to return to them as soon as the current project has slowed down a bit.

thanks for making this interesting plugin, I hv been using it for few months already. Recently, I changed my theme and discovered that there is a problem. Someone leaves a whisper and the whisper message appears at the “recent comment” which in the sidebar, is there any way to fix this?

I just installed 1.2b on my WP 2.1.3 but did not see the whisper check box appeared on my comment page - do you have any idea?
Here’s my comment page:http://www.dannyimages.com/?p=186#respond
I’ve just uploaded the whisper.php file to my plugin folder and activate it.

How do a make the whisper just like yours where it doesn’t have the dropdown list revealing the list of all the users on the site? I would prefer if it would just whisper to the post author.

Hi,
I installed the plugin yesterday and today turns out users don’t see each other’s whispers at all. What’s going on?
Also I noticed in the latest activity something called internal error 500, just now, a day after I installed the plugin.
I need some help. I don’t know why this isn’t working.

Thank you for the plugin share and it’s really good!!
But I found the Beta 1.2 doesn’t work well with WP 2.3.1, it keeps report bug.
Could you help to check that?
Thank you very much!!
(I Deactivate the plugin and hope you will fix it soon, i really like it!!)

Question… I modified some of the coding so that the only whisper recipient is myself (blog admin), rather than any registered member.
It works, except that the dropdown form is showing my name multiple times. How would I fix that?
The code I am using:
else {$username = $wpdb->get_results("SELECT meta_value FROM {$wpdb->usermeta} WHERE user_id = '1' AND meta_key = 'nickname' LIMIT 1"); // for WP2.0
$name = $username[0]->meta_value;
}
Most importantly, thank you for such a nice plugin!

Hi, it’s still me.
I copied the Bug Report sentence as follows:
“Warning: ob_start() [ref.outcontrol]: output handler ‘ob_gzhandler’ cannot be used after ‘URL-Rewriter’ in /home/fairyshe/public_html/wp-includes/functions.php on line 408″
Please if you got time, check this out!!
Thank you very much!!

Looks to me like it’s experiencing conflict with some other plug-ins. Try disabling other plug-ins one at a time to see which ones you are having problem with, and then decide which ones you need more.

I’ll be checking here everyday in hopes of a fix to the RSS bug :D. Would love to use this plugin on our site, it’s a brilliant idea.
January 25th, 2008, 2:27 am
After playing with this, i’m pretty sure it doesn’t work. I narrowed it down to the regex functions not correctly pulling the subsequent user_ids from the saved string. I’m not good with regexes, so i just redid the whole code to how i wanted it (which pretty much eliminated sending messaged to multiple users). Anyway, have a look i’m almost positive the plugin is not working correctly.
